Full Screen
Toggles between Full Screen mode and Split Screen mode.
Auto Size
Useful option in Split-Screen Mode. In opposite to the static splitted screens it makes Xnews adjust the size of the article-list / article-viewer depending on having the focus. You can set the percentage of the focus-/no focus-regions in Xnews.ini, [Display]-section with the variable "AutoSizePctA" and "AutoSizePctB".
Change Subject Width
In the articles list this expands the 'Subject' column to the longest subject currently visible.
Switch H/V Split
In Split Screen Mode you can switch between Horizontal and Vertical Split. For mouse users: Same effect when clicking on the speed indicator in the status bar.
Switch List <-> Viewer
Toggles between the articles list and the article viewer. Can also be done by clicking on the thread/messages indicator in the lower left corner.
Threaded View
Toggle to view the messages threaded or singled out.
Expand All Threads
To save screen space you can make Xnews at first show threads collapsed to a single line. Expand them all using this command
Auto Collapse
Automatically collapses a thread when you expand another one. This of course only makes sense when using threaded view and collapsed threads.
Highlight Current Article
In the articles list sometimes it's possible that you loose overview which is the article you read last. That can happen when you are scrolling the articles list and clicked on other lines (without opening another message). "Highlight Current Article" moves the cursor bar to the latest read article and scrolls the list to that message so it appears on the screen.
Reveal Thread
If you have a filter in place, this will show all articles belonging in the same thread with the current article - without removing the filter.
View stats
Displays information about the opened group (number of loaded and killed articles and binaries, filter stats, and article number range). Don't get fooled: This is the same dialog box as in "Open Special" or "Group | Refresh Headers Special".
Fix Badly Wrapped Text
Tries to repair bad quoting, which often is generated by Outlook Express.
Before:
> Information sources for Nuclear Physics
research institutes
> and accelerator facilities are as
follows
After:
> Information sources for Nuclear Physics research institutes
> and accelerator facilities are as follows
Uniform Quoting
Some people may use other characters for the quote-labeling. This commands equals the quoting character for better reading.
Before:
>=| >blah blah
>=|>blah blah
After:
>>>> blah blah
>>>> blah blah
Show Quoted Text
Hides the quoted text and only displays the actual text. Quoted material will be replaced by > [...] This is a toggle which makes it perfect to use on postings which contain an high amount of quoted text. Assign it to a keyboard shortcut (e.g. "Q") and make fullquote-postings readable in a glance.
Show All Headers
In "Special | Setup - Display" you can specify some headers you want to see in each posting. That doesn't mean all other headers are discarded, they're just invisible. Choose this command to make all headers appear.
Word Wrap
Wraps text in the article viewer
Raw Text
Displays an article as it entered Xnews. Raw mode means: no colors, all headers and no further processing (like blinding out attachments).
Use Fixed Font
Shows all text in the article-viewer in a fixed font. Nice when you read with a proportional font and want to do a quick switch to see ASCII-art or correct underlining with characters. If you set up a fixed font by default you will probably notice the activation of this command only by the loss of your quote colors.
ROT-13
[snipped from the manual:]"ROT-13 is a very simple scheme to scramble text so it is not immediately readable. People use ROT-13 to scramble messages that may be offensive or messages that contain spoilers (ending of movies, punch lines, etc.). The idea is that the reader must first unscramble the message before reading it, so s/he cannot read it by accident."
You can scamble/unscramble a portion of text by highlighting it before using the command.
